According to the Malaysian Ministry of Health, an estimate of 3000 cases of injuries occur at the playground every 3 months. Children between 5-9 years of age are the most common victims of playground injuries. The main factor contributing to these injuries are poor playground surface. Observing this, it is crucial to remind the public that playground safety is the responsibility of municipalities, schools, childcare facilities, health departments, playground manufacturers and installers, park and recreation agencies, public facilities managers.
The training of Playground Safety personnel is essential to implement and enhance safety measures to reduce or eliminate the likelihood of serious injury, especially one that results in fatality or permanent debilitating injury. It is important to understand and become responsible for the design, care, and the operation of public playgrounds, to eliminate playground hazards while not totally eliminating the element of risks, as a certain degree of risk in a child’s play environment is an integral to developing children’s motor-skills and increase learning experiences.
