Playgrounds. How safe it is for your kids?
Playgrounds are places that contribute to children’s physical development and social skills, but unwanted mishaps could occur if playground safety is not taken into account.
In this week’s edition of Mid Week with FOMCA, the Federation of Malaysian Consumer’s Association (FOMCA) explores the statistics of playground safety in Malaysia, stating that the current state of playground safety is outright deplorable.
For a while now, the statistics have shown that about 1,000 cases of injuries are reported to happen monthly on playground in Malaysia. That’s approximately 33 children aged 5 to 9 years old sent to the hospital every day.

Since 2017, Department of Standards of Malaysia have launched safety guidelines MS 966 : Playground Equipment – Safety Performance for Public Use Specification and MS 2665 : Playground Surfacing – Impact Attenuation of Surfacing Materials Within The Use Zone of Playground Equipment Specification.
FOMCA calls for local authorities in Malaysia to take responsibility by performing thorough safety audits on local public playgrounds at least once a year nationwide. This is so that problems and defects can be detected early and local authority can take the necessary actions before any tragedies may strike.
We never again want to witness tragedies such as the freak accident occurring near Kepong, Kuala Lumpur in November 2018 involving a 15 year old girl who passed after her head became stuck in a non-compliant playground equipment.
With action from all sides including local authority, property developers, playground manufacturers, playground managers, we may put a stop to these dire statistics and stop injuries and death by preventable accidents in its tracks for good.
